The gear drive is on the front of the blower case, behind the drive snout. It is all possible that the lube in the gear drive has decided you've abused it enough. Getting it too hot will make for some interesting sounds. You can take the snout off and swap the gear drive is what I think Andy meant.
But, if you really want to upgrade, I agree with Jeff.
