1973 was the last year for Ford Convertabiles, due to declining popularity, and Insurance regulation. T-Tops debuted with the 1978 Mustang II, more or less filling the gap, untill the 1983 model year when the Convertable returned. Ford sold 23,438 Mustang Convertables that year.

Tony, you have to realize that if they never built the Mustang II which in fact sold more models than any other in Mustang History, we might not have our car at all today... We could have been driving Granada's!!!!

To put things in proper prospective, look at the other Cars that were built during the 70's: AMC Pacer, AMC Gremlin, Chevy Vega, Chevy Chevette,Datsun B-210, come to mind, now does the II look better?

You have to remember that there were a lot of things going on during the 70's that the Automanufactures had no control of; a recession, Gas crisis, tightning emission controls, greater safety standards, CAFE fuel mileage standards. The II had very respectable sales numbers, 386,000 in '74, compared to just over 400,000 '64 1/2's. It never was intended to be a high performance Car, just a sporty, econmical daily driver.

The II had an innovative front suspension originally designed to improve the ride, over that of the Pinto. Years later Street Rodders discovered the suspension under the unloved, discredited II's in salvage yards. Many II's were scrapped just for the front suspension components, which has lead to the relative rarity of the overlooked II.

I have often wondered what a '78 Cobra II with a 5.0 Fox driveline swapped in would do.
