    GM T-5 in a Cobra WTF

    Turns out some idiot put a GM T-5 Gear box in my Cobra before I bought it. Wouldn't have noticd but I happened to mic the clutch alignment tool and the pilot shaft and got a .100 difference. So the pilot shaft was .590 and of cource it has just been floating around unsupported in the pilot bearing. The different gear box would explain alot like the hard shifts and my speedo being off with having no gears in the rear. I machined a bushing to take up the slack till I can afford to get a TKO after next summer. It took awhile to figure out what the hell was going on but after talking to Ford and Tremec the unbelievable was true. People do some dumb stuff.

    Droppin the engine in next week.

    There are a lot of subtle, little, differences in the Borg-Warner/Tremec T-5, depending on the application.

    I put a stronger T-5 from a 93' Cobra in my 88' GT. Because of the different gear ratio's, had to go back, and replace the speedo drive gear from the 93' T-5, with the one from the 88' T-5. There was a different tooth count between the two. It was a good upgrade though, with a King Cobra Clutch, and MGW shifter too.

    I wonder if I can put a T-5 in my 79 and replace the 4 speed?????

    Should be a real easy swap. The SVO Mustangs had T-5's backing their turbo-4 bangers, there is the bellhousing you would need. You are allready going for an 8.8 rear, so an FRRP Aluminum driveshaft would finish off that upgrade. Lots of good shifters, and clutches for the T-5 on the market, go for it.

    I know Sonic03snake is Laurel Mountain Mustang and Im goin to talk to him about the 8.8, I'm sure he has one or knows where I could find a good one!!!

    Ask Him about T-5's while you are at it Dave. You will want a strong one (World Class Quality), depending on the projected output of your motor. 3.55 gears in the third member might be a good compromise, for crusing to Knotts, San Diego, etc., fuel mileage, and noise. The light weight of a Fox Chassis Mustang, will be an advantage too. Ask your Brother what the paint code of your Pace Car is. I suspect it is the same as Light Pewter Metallic that is on my 72' (5A). The Bell housing for 5 speed Thunderbird turbo coupes is the same as the one used on the SVO Mustangs, another source for that part.

    While He has it in His Shop, might ask if He can get it on the Chassis Jig and see if it is true. If so, and depending what your plans for the Car are, might want to get some full length subframe connectors welded it. Foxes are known to flex around a lot, particularly the hatchbacks.

    I will ask about the T-5 the guys did a full body inspection with the chassis and said its right on... I was actually going with 3:73 for this rear end!!! I don't think the judges will have a clue about the 8.8 but you never know but the gears are def. going to be upgraded but since it is aa 4 banger I might do the 3:55's but really want the 3:73's

    what year is the car and do you have 26 spline input shaft there is a chance either that someone installed a better shaft or you might have a TKO

    Tranny is a 10 spline with a smaller end pilot shaft diameter. Tremec said it was a GM T-5 from the casting numbers and pilot shaft diameter. Tag was missing so thats all they could tell me. Not sure what GM vehicles used the 10 spline T-5. I think the camaro/firebird used a 14 spline T-5 so it might be out of a S-10. I would really like to know the the ratios but oh well it will work till I buy a TKO next Fall.
