    South Mountain full run 8 24 10

So I finally got to do a full, unobstructed South Mountain run. Id been hoping, planning for it since before summer. My plan worked. Pick a workday, early in the week, after lunch and make it HOT! I got there more than an hour later than planned but fortunately that ended up not causing problems.

There was no one at the entrance gate and all the parking stalls at the Ranger shack were filled. Now I know whenever I go back if this is in place then then it is indeed free and clear throughout the park. But I didnt know that this time. And I still cant just blast as much as Id really like because the sound could attract the Rangers or peds, hikers, w/e could always call in and "tattle" on me. Plus, theres no guarantee there WONT be traffic, so discretion remains the better part of valor.

Anyway, I got vid pointing from both directions and pics as well. Storms were forming and I got some lightning vid. So far Ive only compiled the forward vid. If I can, I want to do either split screen or Picture In Picture with the rear vid, but I dont think the software I have will do that. Im also considering making the same version but with a soundtrack, low volume to still hear the Stingers. I havent messed with the storm vid yet.

I didnt encounter any traffic till I was leaving. Thats where getting there when I planned wouldve helped because it was "after work" traffic, but going the opposite way. Only thing left I have to do there now as far as vid is have someone with me so they can video me from the tripod mount on the roadside as I run up and down the mountain in three different sections. Eagarly looking forward to getting that done.

Wow for real? I wish I had known, its always more fun with other cars. The three other times Ive filmed have been with other GO.net guys.

Great Pics and Video!! Sounds Like a Mini Road trip to me... Wouldn't it be fun if we could close the road all the way up so you could really drive it up, use the whole road and not have to worry about traffic....

    Thanks, Dave.

Trust me, Ive long considered the idea of a "South Mountain Hillclimb". If Nevada and other states can close off actual public roads for "speed events", hypothetically the City of Phoenix could do the same for a far tamer event at South Mountain. But, the logistics, coordination, etc, would be insurmountable without some large, national event promotor involved Im sure.

Plus the hue and cry from the timid, milquetoast, "car haters" and environmentalists.

But how fun would that be! Insurance would be an issue but it would be very cool to have an event like that here in the valley. Get some good sponsors and prizes. As long as folks didnt go plum crazy, maybe limit the speeds...

Yeah, it would indeed be great. Speeds would definitely have to be limited, either in a class structure like the Open Road events or just a max for anyone regardless of car mods or driver competition history. I would guess 50 MPH in any "straight" section and 20? on the tightest hairpins. An advisory Board made of SCCA members or officials from the Pikes Peak event would be useful in determining that.

"The 1st Annual South Mountain "Race To The Sun" Hill Climb". Id just about guarantee that the Phoenix City council would never approve it. Buuut, they do need revenue. Hmm, the wheels are turning...
