View Full Version : what shop could help me?
As some of you know a while back a bolt broke that holds my lower intake on while trying to do a simple intake swap. The car has sat ever since(6 months now) collecting dust and making me sick as I have no clue what to do as I was over my head just swapping out the intake. My parents decided to help me fix her for my birthday but I don't even know if this is something a regular shop can do or if I need to go somewhere special. Is there a place that would be better at this then others preferably on the east side?

What car with what engine?
A bolt is pretty easy to get out with the right tools.

Yeah I've done it myself with a bolt removal kit and just by drilling a small hole in the bolt and reversing it out of the threads.

He has been trying for a while... Take a shot of it for us if you can...

its more then just a broken bolt now. It was the #6 bolt in the lower intake that has the coolant passage below it. My mother was the original owner and at 110 miles last year the top end of the motor had never been cracked open. I decided to replace the upper and lower intake with a cobra intake and when I took that bolt out it snapped as it has rusted from the bottom of the coolant passage up. It was just a rusty mess where you really couldn't tell where the block began and the bolt ended. I tried 3 different types of back-out-bits but had no luck. John on here and I drilled it out and had it centered up fairly well when I snapped one of the back-out bits inside the bolt. We did some drilling it it to try and work it out but it broke at a sharp angle and is chewing up drill bits like paper. I don't know if it can be saved or if I need a new motor but it has been killing me to watch it collect dust in the garage.
So like I said, anyone know a shop on the east side that might be able to help me?

Damn. The fact that a bolt out snapped in there presents a bit of a problem. Before you guys went to the bolt outs did ya heat it up a bit with a torch? I take it there's no way to grab onto the bolt out? A picture might be helpful. I'm local and if it's something I can tackle I'll help ya out for free on this one. Hate to hear of a car just sitting.

Replacing the head would be my recommendation. The time it takes to try and remove that bolt would be more than the time spent swapping the head.
I have a spare stock E7TE lying around collecting dust if you want it. Needs a cleaning but it's in great shape. All you'd need to buy is a new head gasket and head bolt kit(reusing factory head bolts isn't recommended). Drop me a PM if you want it.
there was nothing to grab from the start. It rusted from the bottom up and snapped down inside fo the hole.
I was over my mechanical head doing the intake when this happened and will admit that with exception to the alternator I know diddly about motors. I thought this bolt went down into the block itself? It is all the way up front on the drivers side by the distributor hole?

I would replace the head, head bolts(both sides) and head gaskets(both sides) while you have it apart right. While you have the heads off clean the hell out of them and make sure when you replace the bolts you torque them to the correct specs. (I use ARP bolts but for a stock 5.0 its not required)

I know its frustrating and you just want to get it fixed as fast and as cheap as possible. It would be best that since you the car is down to take your time and do it correct the first time so that way you don't have any future problems.
its been frustrating for a long time now but I am in no hurry to get it running as I know that when it does get going my truck will go down. I am never going to put an old bolt back into the car again so new bolts all around is a must. The first thing you gotta do when you are in a hole you do not want to be in is stop digging, so I have no intention of doing this myself. I will probably go by the mustang shop this afternoon unless somebody has a better idea?
So, what head would you recomend and what else would be good to do when I am in this far?
I have a pair of E7s you can have if you need them
is the head, different from the heads? I thought the heads were on the top of the cyclinder and had the valves in it?

No there isn't any difference but I would get those heads from dan and put them on your car with new bolts and head gaskets because if you only replace one then you might run into a problem with the old head later in time.
I am just a motor idiot, I didn't realize that the bolt was broken in the head I thought it was in the block.
I had plans on replacing the heads sooner or later anyhow, just not for this reason. I understand the importance of the heads on the 5.0 and if I am going to replace them I would really only like to do it once and get the cam at the same time. What would you guys recomend for this combo to go with a fairly stock 5.0(replaced intake so far)? The car is on the street 10X more then it is on the strip and because my mother was the original owner I do not plan on selling it.

No need to get frustrated or discouraged from doing things yourself, you just have to learn that PB Buster is yo friend. :icon_cool:
honestly people there was no heating, pb blasting or back out bit that would have worked on that rusty nub.
So any help with heads/cam choice?

I would go with an E303 cam would be your best bet.
I still run the E7 heads with a little port work done and E303 cam, 373 gears and stock bottom end with ac, smog pump, power steering, and pulled 268 hp to the wheels

I havent read to many post, but I would try to just get gt-40 heads and replacing your old heads.
I found some nice holley system max heads with roller rockers for $1100. I dropped it off this afternoon to have it put back together at the mustang shop. Can't wait to get it running agian let alone to see how much of a difference it all makes. Prior to this I had only done underdrive pullies and a CAI. How much do you think it will put down at at the wheels with the system max heads, 73mm MAF, ported cobra intake,

if you dont know how to do this then i would not try to do this on your own if you do it coulod be one expensive learning experance
if you guys were east side I would have it in your shop. I wish I could learn more about my motor. I read any book I can find on it but I really wish I could get some hands on experience.
