Donations are only used to pay for site operation costs.
Thanks for the support.
Jeff
Jeff, How about running some 14 day or even 7 day auctions on items people might donate. They do that on VMF and get some heavy $$ raised..
You don't even need to run it yourself.. Have the donater post an item and take bids. Highest bidder after 1 or 2 weeks donates the funds to HPS..
Run the ads as sticky's..
Rules are easy....you bid...you win...you pay...you donate.

How many members does the site have. I am sure that if it divided up it wouldn't be that much per person.

Im sure there are enough regulars here that will pitch in.

There is no pressure to donate. Between the sponsors and donations the site is in the black. The above amount is for the server only. It does not include domain registration and software cost etc. Every little bit of support helps.
Since June of 2006 HPS has received $880 in members donations which are greatly appreciated.

They're in the top section of the forum page, and stickied. They run theirs for a month, kind of too long for me. But a lot of vendors donate nice parts for the site.

i'll definetly pitch in a few bucks. especially with the tax check coming soon. i love the auctions too!!! very cool. might see if i have a few things to put up on the site.
Mr. Austin

I think personally like every two months or when ever someone has something to donate (even after the payment is set) we should have the auctions. more cool stuff. and money going to good things.maybe twice three times maybe a year
finding myself recently unemployed I will have to politely decline.
Anyone need an electronics technician?

This sounds good and I will pass on my donation.
The auction sounds great as well. I might have a few things to put towards the auction.
If your interested I also run an Auction Site that is 100% free, Ive owned for a long time about 8 years but if you all want to list anything on to run this donation thing feel free. http://www.QuicklySell.com (http://www.QuicklySell.com)
Feel free to use it, NO STRINGS ATTACHED.

Thanks Joe I will check it out.
No Problem.
Ill even make any special category's, if you need anything just let me know. Site works great and if it wasn't a competition with ebay it might have done better but, now its just become my baby Ive had the site so long I just hate not having it.
I started the site in 2001 because I was a power seller on ebay from almost the beginning, eventually the ebay fees were costing me more than the item I was selling. Id sell 25.00 items of stuff and it would cost me 3-4 dollars to list it and so I decided Id start my own deal and not pay any fees. Well obviously it didnt work out, its tough to make a site work online, but I have over 100 dedicated sellers so they like it so thats why I keep it. When you can list an item for up to 30 days with photos free, thats a pretty good deal.
So anyway thats my story and Im stickin to it! Let me know If I can help. Who knows maybe QuicklySell becomes a mustang haven for Mustangs and their parts, since its 100% free I dont care who uses it or for what reason. Long as its family friendly.
I also run my own servers so bandwidth is never any issue for me.

Why does it cost so much?
Servers cost money for a site of this size and traffic.

I'm aware of that. I'm just inquiring what company is hosting this site. I can't see the bandwidth exceeding 200 GB and that normally goes for 20-40 dollars a month.

Sure on a shared server with 200 other sites (We moved off of this type of setup last year because the site became very slow)
Shared servers are for static sites, not busy vbulletin forums.
This site can not run in that type of limited resource environment.
Bandwidth isn't even a factor at this point, but server RAM and database performance is.
I have access to a dedicated server, its not really mine its my web design guru that's my friend and someone Ive known for 10 years. Anyway he says depending on how much bandwidth the site uses he could save you a bundle from the 1055. Let me know Jeff if your interested and Ill hook you up with his number and you all can talk. Hes a good guy his name is Jason. He also lives in Texas.

Thanks for the offer Joe, but the support from realwebhost is top notch. I have no plans to leave them.
Gotcha.
Your paying about double what hosting can cost. But I understand, once your comfortable with someone that's usually where most stay. Just wanted to put it out there to help.

You find a fully managed Linux VPS server with 1 GB of Ram / CPanel
for half of my cost and I will buy you a case of beer.
Not even Go Daddy offers anything near 1/2 my price.
In the vbulletin community www.realwebhost.net (http://www.realwebhost.net) is a well respected host.
I have been down the cheap road in the beginning. You get what you pay for.
903-887-1487 Jason says he can beat the price, just trying to help Jeff.

it only runs at .02% of its capability.
ANYWAY,
I'm out of this. Just wanted to help you out, doesn't matter to me, I donated regardless, but with the economy the way it is I thought saving all you can and still keep quality hosting would seem like a better call to me. Figuring HPS is a community so all members should try to help other members, I mean that's what a good clubs suppose to do.
This guy isn't a hosting company hes just someone I know personally that I thought could help you out and he would also make some money. Jason is top notch to me. His programming and knowledge is second to no one Ive known.

The server sounds great. The problem is the support. If I have an issue at 3AM realwebhost will usually reslove it within 30 minutes. I thought about it again and decided I am not moving the site.
Thanks for the offer though.

Jeff,
I Just submitted a donation to help out; will be claiming it for my 2009 taxes LOL. An idea to make some money for the site hosting fees as it is starting to get hotter is to put on a huge, well organized and advertised car wash. We could ask some of the ladies from Hooters, and from some of “those clubs” down by Stage 3 to help out… sign holders, donation takers, car washers? Who better to get an excellent car wash from but from a bunch of Mustangs owners with major vehicle cleanliness OCD’s?
Hooters Girls Yea! LOL
With the donations, sponsors, and reserves the 2009 bill is covered at this point.
Jeff,
No problem at all I fully understand. I was just trying to help. Since I do alot of website and internet stuff I try to help out the sites I frequent. Having 11 websites myself I know the difficulties of running a website :veryhappy: Stick with whats working for you!

If you ever think about moving it, I've always had good luck with 1and1. I had a dedicated server with them up until recently and never had any problems with support.
They appear to have a similar server for $69.99 per month which would be about $840 a year.

--EDIT: Just realized you said that you had a virtual server. The one above is a dedicated machine, not virtual. The virtual with similar specs (guaranteed 1GB of RAM, Burstable to 4. Burstable to 1GB would be even cheaper) are 3 months free and then $59 a month. That $531 for the year. It has Plesk, not cPanel though. Does that get me a case of beer??? :icon_lol::icon_lol:
