View Full Version : Bad day @ my last carshow

I did a car show this last weekend, and learned a lot. One, everyone in Mesa knows each other (can you say "click"). Two, never enter a peer voting only show, everybody just votes for their friends and who they know. Three, and most important, never enter your car in the class it should be in. Let me expand on this one. Here's what happened, I entered my car in the Mod Class, since I have several major mods, i.e.. vertical doors, saleen top, roll bar, it's definitely not a stock 95. There were 3 trophies to be had, and 4 cars entered that class, 2 had no major mods whatsoever, especially the certain mustang who shall remain anonymous, let's just say he is as stock as the day it drove off the showroom floor. Well thanks to the clicks, guess who was low man on the totem pole. All I can say is what a crock. Then there was the guy with a fox body and tons of major mods and this idiot entered stock class and took 2nd. I give up, from now on I'm entering the under construction class. Just needed to vent guys, Thanks.

its all good man, thats about how i left my last show feeling. sometimes car shows can be really full of bs. thats why i have been having my best times at the drag strip lately. as there its about your abilities and your cars abilities. not what people "think".

Sorry to hear Kev. But to me, the point of a show is just that, to show off the car. Its not a "hardware hunt". Never hope, plan or expect to win. Now knowing you COULDVE won if things had been straight DOES bite, but still, trophies are like Beanie Babies, its pointless to try and collect them.

Ya, I'm hearin' you guys, this one just got to me. I'm not giving up, just rethinking some things. See what gets me is I built my car, sure everyone's proud of their new car, but they didn't build it, I guess car shows arn't what they used to be. I think I'll go enter my new jeep hemi commander in the upcoming mopar show, lol:biglaugh:

Forgive me for my question, because I haven't attended any of these shows, but besides the issue you mentioned, are there other downsides, like having people close to your vehicle (fingerprints/scratches/etc.)?

Worst problem is KIDS and PARENTS that do not control them. Don't get me wrong, in a way the kids seeing our "cool" cars and hearing their comments and their little eyes getting wide, is a lot of fun. I had a kid with his parent walk up and then the kid put his foot on my door sill and scrape his foot down. Also kids seem to see with their fingers, they just got to touch it. When we were at the friday cruise in, I saw one kid go down the line and touch every car. Other things to watch for are people with coats on that will lean over your vehical to get a better look, and the zipper pull of an open coat right on the cars paint. I got pulled over the other night and the cop had the corner of his metal clipboard about a half inch from my door, I had to tell him to please move it away from my paint job.

Rather not say, don't want to start something with a fellow club member, but I was pissed enough not to come to sundays meeting. Just because stock class had so many cars in it, is not a reason to enter the car in another class were it does not belong, I blame it more on the people running the show than him. Hope he enjoys his undeserved trophy. And for all you who are thinking I'm just out to collect trophies, not true, just don't like being shut out of one by someone not being honest about his class, I'm seeing more and more of this at the shows and I just don't think it's right.

I understand. It's nicer to get a fair shot at winning. We try not to have that at our shows, but we're just human. That's why we ask for as many volunteers as possible. Then we have people who can verify if a car is classed correctly and change if it's not. As for peoples choice: I have a white car. I can't win unless there are no others in my class.

Those are all things to consider. I also saw the kid touching all of the car's at the cruise in on friday night. I think it is way kool for kid's to be happy and interested in the car's. My dad took my to the drag's and car show's when I was a kid. But it would be nice for the parents to watch there kid's a little better when they get to the car shows. But remember that some of these people are just not into car's they are just there for something to do.
Now when it comes to the car shows that we pay for and take pride in: I always hope that there would be fair shows out there that we really have a chance to win something, it just makes you feel good about the hard work that you put into your car.
I was pleasantly surprised when I won a trophy at the pancake breakfast, as I never thought that my car would have half a chance. You just never know how it may go and your next show you may take first in your class.
Good Luck!:woot2:

OK, I told myself that I wouldn't reply to this post but I am just curious on acouple of things. Don't want to start any beef's, just curious. One, there are clicks everywhere. Be it Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Mustangs, GTO's ect... You see it at all car shows. All "Clicks" try and park with each other at the shows. It was even at your last show. You parked with the rest of the mustangs. As for a peer voting show, most shows are like that now. And yes, clicks will vote for there clicks. Meaning, and there are some people that are not like this, but if there was a mustang in a class and a GTO in the same class and everything was equal (Be it mods or stock) being a mustang guy (Click) I would vote for the mustang over the Goat. Just being honest. Class'es at car shows are tricky. There is no standard at each show of how many mods, is considered a mod car and what kind of mods. Someone might have mod'ed there interior and not the rest of the car and enter mod'ed or stock. What is a mod? It is different for each person. The person you are talking about that won over you had some mods on his car. Maybe they were not major mods, but they were mods. He could of enter both ways. Lastly you said "Then there was the guy with a fox body and tons of major mods and this idiot entered stock class and took 2nd." This guy did not enter stock. He entered 80's and Newer Muscle Car/ Pony Car. He could of entered Mods if he wanted too but he didn't. He had an amazing car. I don't know about you, but I enter car shows for one, help out the charity it is for. Two, to appreciate other peoples cars and there hard work, and Three to see if there is something someone done to there car that I like so I can do it to my car!:hyper: And four, to meet new friends that share the same love for cars that I do. If I get a trophy along the way great, if not I make a new friend. Like I said before, I don't want to start no beefs or piss anyone off, just putting my two cents worth in on this post. :Bucktooth:

yea car shows never go as you expect you do a car show to basically hang out bs and winning is a plus but dont go in expecting to win. Personal taste many times conflicts with judges, what you think its good looking might be hidious to another. The judges at the show might not have been for the import look on a domestic car etc. Remember your not just getting judged on any 1 things its a combo, you get scored on paint, interior, engine, etc. As far as stock cars being in your class tech that should be an advantage you have more done in the class.
Interesting discussion. I'm tempted to participate, just to meet other people and see what's been done with other Mustangs. Mine is pretty basic and won't really be wowing anyone. I enjoy driving it nonetheless. Still debating if I'll send in registration for the April 5th show. PM me if you want to give me your thoughts.

There has been debate on how many mods to a car ie: floormats. chrome intake, pullies, billet parts in the engine bay, to the interior, on and on. How many should there be to change a car that is in stock category, to a mod? The last show that i went to, the club running the show, decided that 5 modifications that were visible would keep the car stock, over 5 the car is classed to modified. Other car shows have more and some have less. But like others have said, it's up the who is running the show to control this.

03-12-08, 01:35 AM
Whats there needs to be is a standardized catagory list that is adopted by all clubs, event promotors, etc. Like MPAA movie ratings. But, to keep things fair, a single deviation from stock should put you in a modded catagory. A person could have an expensive paint job and wheels and nothing else, yet still fall into a stock catagory. So the modded catagories should be based on 3 or maybe 4 groups.
Lightly modded. 5 or less simple things, nothing more major than wheels/tires. Stock paint and body parts.
Mildly modded. 6 to 10 mods including more striking visual mods such as simple stripes, painted or vinyl, simple flames, simple body kit. Single color change with no "extravagant" paint processes such as flip paint, custom metalflakes or candy colors. No body part fabrication.
Heavily modded. More than 10 mods of any kind. Multi color change. Flip paint, candies, custom colors, mild body fabrication such as shaving, nosed, decked, chopped, channeled, frenched, cut windshield frame.
Unlimited. Anything goes.
crazy ray
03-12-08, 01:47 AM
That would be great, if only the clubs would use that catagoring of cars.
All good info for me since the JENNABEARS show on March 29th will be my 1st show I organized.
That happened to me once. I entered a stock class and got beat by a DSG Cobra that was well over 600HP with a Kenne Bell. Entered another show and the low rider that was hardly detailed won. Haven't entered a show since.
Ruckus46gt
03-12-08, 09:07 AM
the best way i've been told 5 or 6 small mods are still considered stock. What is a small mod exhaust, cold air intake, control etc. Any power adders, change of engines, body enhancements then you are modified. If you think about it every mustang etc has an exhaust and intake for the most part so how could you say thats 100 stock you cant but the flip side is how would you have enough for a stock class. My first show i entered stock class since i only had exhaust, stall, a lid, and stock rims painted. Turns out they didnt have enough to have there own class so i got combined in with modified. Still pulled out the win but sucked going against a heads cam nitrous car same color with the little rs ground effect kit.
like i previously said you cant go into a show thinking your going to win and cant think it at the show. Its all luck if you have a clean car. You dont know what the judge is going to be looking for that day. Enter a show cause your proud of your car and want to show it off. Not for the awards
AZSonicSnake
03-12-08, 10:21 AM
But like others have said, it's up the who is running the show to control this.
This is a key point, and personally its why i will now be VERY choosy about what shows i goto. since it sucks being told one thing and having another thing done. just not my cup of tea. but i think ruckus said it best with, "Enter a show cause your proud of your car and want to show it off. Not for the awards ". very well said man.

Thanks for all the comments on our shows guys. We CMC adjusted the rules that MCA gives out for our judged fall show. ( Not this years though guys its a full blown MCA Judges show with judges comming from all over the place, your car will be judged against the "book" and not other entries in the "Judged" Class.
Our usuall fall show..
The point system works very well.. The owner tallys his car based on his mods. Little things like chrome engine goodies, floor mats etc are 5 points each but superchargers custom paint jobs and stuff like that are usually 30 points and most guys with power adders have other mods that puts them over into modified. Hank, Chris B. Darrel and myself really lok over the cars to make sure people don't get "sandbagged" I like the judged show that we put on because we as judges base the car on 3 basic principals. Workmanship, cleanliness and presentation. So even someone who has a ton of mods can be outdone by a lesser modded car because of the way it was put together.
Once your in a class then its up to you how your car is judged IE in modified. a 66 point car could beat a 145 point car if its cleaner and better built and in the Factory stock class a bone stock car that goes against a lightly modded car has a even channce depending how long they prepped the car for the show.
There are factors that we cannot control... Friends vote for friends cars sometimes and that can be a problem, me, I vote for the pure presentation! We try to be as fair as we can but cannot tell people how to vote in a peopls choice show. I was at a show in California and a large club show up and they voted for members cars that some were frankly not even close to being winners but they won, thats just the way it goes sometimes.
0-65 points car is in factory stock
65 and above they go into modified..period
We do combine years sometimes but never ever put a modded car into a stock class!!
CARS SHOWS ARE MEANT TO BE FUN!!! Meat new people and BS with friends and enjoy the day, when it stops being that for me, well then I'm out!!

i think that point system is frankly one of the best ways to go about it. assigning points for mods i think is the best way to do it. makes it the best and fairest show. basing on the sheer number of mods is not a good way imo. because as said, you have to count anything thats not stock, and frankly something like floor mats is a mod. and how does that compare against something like wheels or a body kit? it does not. but when you use something so open, it leaves too much room.

Every show i've done has been judged on a point system but certain cars depending on type and amount of mods go into stock classes. Floormats, exhaust, cold air intake like i said before would be stock class still. Majore mods like body kits, power adders, engine swaps, over the number or small mods for stock class puts you in the modified class. Then from there cars are judged on the point system

this is not what happens when in transit to and from a shows and i just hate it... I especially
hate the person that hangs on my blind spot on the interstate to look at the car... than if i
have to move over for some reason their car is in the way. I like the way these cars drive
and perform but if i only had a star-trek clocking device that would make the car appear
as a 80's Chevy Chevette or Pinto or some other non dispirit beater that no one would
see or invisible mode...that would be fine with me.So......what i know is this.....while
moving to a destination people act like I'M someone that they seen on TMZ (not to my
liking) but when i arrive the whole thing changes now i'm this A-hole in a fancy azz car that
they glare at...... same person that was on the interstate 15 min ago. now no one has any

Ok, Gonna step into this one, Got my Keyboard back. I have read quite a few of your posts. I totally agree with you guys on this one. BUT.....I went to the large show a few months back, just to hang out and look at all the nice cars, never expected to win. I drove home with a plaque. To my amazement!! It was not like a normal car show at all. I have not done nothing to my car. As everyone knows. There were about 1000 cars there and about 200 or so mustangs. I was totally shocked and called Dave J when I saw a red dot on my headlight. So you just never know. As far as Clicks, yes there are certain clicks in car clubs. But like Dave says, THE CLUB IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT, meaning, if your not involved and dont show to certain things, of course your not going to be in the so called click. These people always go to things together and have fun at things etc.. they have gotten to know one another, and hang out. So is it a bad thing to be in a click, No. But for an outsider looking in, you feel like it is, Its perfectically normal to feel that way, but jump on it, have fun, Show off your car, hang out. Come to the clicky side, its fun over here. :pepper::pepper::pepper::pepper: See ya all at the Pony Show April 5th
