View Full Version : Cobra Broke

Well I noticed some vibration and what appeared to be gear wine on the drive home last night. Took the car out to investigate again today and still noticed the noise and some vibration so I was like WTF?

I did some looking around and everything appears to be OK on the rear end. It didn't really make sense that the gears would wine after a track beating with a solid pinion shim, ARP bearing cap studs and a T/A girdle.

I was attempting to remove the drive shaft to check the pinion nut only to find that the yoke will not slide off the output shaft. I also noticed the bell housing appears to be a little lower on the passenger side.

So there may be a motor mount issue not sure yet.

I know for sure the drive shaft yoke has welded itself to the output shaft of the tranny which more than likely explains the vibration.

Well life is good I am getting all 4 wisdom teeth removed on Monday. I hope they come out easier than it will be to remove the drive shaft.

Bummer. Sorry to hear about the car and your teeth. Maybe you should have kept the IRS in until it broke?

I don't think this is a rear end issue. The drive shaft yoke is supposed to move freely on the output shaft to compensate for the suspension moving up and down. Well it is totally stuck. I even gave it a few taps with a hammer and it will not move. So I know that stuff is toast.

In did set a new best time last night of 10.75

When the tranny comes out it is not going back in. This will be the 4th time the tranny has been out of the car in 12 months. 4R70 sounds like a plan.

This may sound kinda dumb but....I had a 66 Ford Galaxy 500 and needed to take the driveline out for some reason...can't remember but when it wouldn't come out I came up with a plan. I took a comealong and chained it to the front yoke and the rear axle. After about an hour of banging and winching it still wouldn't come out. Well I said the hell with it and went in the house. Came back out later and found the driveline laying on the ground....go figure. Just a thought...lol

Found the problem. I finally got the driveshaft off the car. The output shaft is bent and the splines twisted. I am surprised it didn't break.

No big deal. I have had good luck with not breaking anything since Oct 04 so I guess I am due.

I am doing a bunch of auto research to find the best fit for my application.

that trans eats up alot of HP to turn that bad boy.

C-4 FTW and when he makes more power then do a glide

C4 won't hold up to the abuse and the glide will do unless he plans to still drive it on the street. The 2 speed is no fun for that.

Look no further than here for a trans Jeff:

I have been doing a bunch of research on C4s', TH400's and 4R70's. I will go with one of them.

Viper_ed
12-17-07, 12:47 PM
I priced out a C4 for my 88 Turbo car and it ended up being almost the same price as doing a TH400. The TH400 will be the only tranny you'll ever have to buy if you get one that's done right.

its one of those things where a turbo 400 just eats more power, while a manually shifted c4 auto will take less. and we all know jeff likes to go fast lol.

I spoke with D&D today. Sounds like their Viper Specs are now a Cobra Core that is a direct bolt in. Just change the yoke.

For the time being a 6 speed will probably go back in.

The ultimate plan is an auto. But I am very picky and want to do it right the first time.

Running 3.55 gears and run at about 2,800 rpm going 65-70mph.
I got 18mpg driving 1200 miles back from atlanta when I originally bought the car.
Never really checked mpg after that.:sticktonge:

And saying an auto is no fun on the street is wrong. With this much power traction is the only issue and a stick would make it that much harder.:woot2:

315 35 17's bfg dr's.

Speedo seems to work good.

Remember I do have a gear vendor on the end though(like high low in dump truck). I actually used the gear vendor on top end of track. It's supposed to be good up to 1200 rwhp.
I can give you more info on how the gear vendor works if you want. It wasn't cheap but the car is so street friendly it's scary.

10.75 is you new goal Mr Spark plug.

I was scheduled for an hour to get a 4 teeth out. Left two hours and 45 minutes later. The tops came right out. The bottoms were difficult. They had to drill the bone to get the hooked roots to release. So it still hurts and it would even hurt a big muscle man.
