I'd say compression, but it's just a guess...

You mean #4....

It's either 2 or 3

definetly #2.

Actually, the cam profile and the exhaust closing has a lot to do with filling the cylinder for the next firing.

absolutely #2

three.....its vacuum.....

I'd go with #3. I would think its the initial pressure on the valve and once it opens the air rushes in

Piston going down, suction caused by seal of piston ring + oil to cyl wall.

Three..... negative pressure pulls air and fuel in the chamber....Atmospheric pressure forces air in attempt to make up for the lower pressure.

http://members.cox.net/gtofan/Image1awa.jpg I'll also say the answer is three. However, you have now polled the audience, and only have two life lines left.:veryhappy:

Piston makes compression going up, if it would do the same down you'd have oil coming out everywhere.

wow that GCC class paid off! ha ha ha:pepper:

the intake charge is pulled in. do to the diff. in pres. Outside it is 14.7 inside is lower....

do you get it?

Suction (charge exchange stroke)
When the piston moves down, air (diesel engine or direct injection petrol engine) or a fuel/air mixture (petrol engine) is drawn through the intake valve.
Compression (power stroke)
The cylinder volume is compressed.
Expansion (power stroke)
In the petrol engine, the fuel/air mixture is ignited by a spark plug, whereas in the diesel engine fuel is injected under high pressure and the mixture ignites spontaneously.
Exhaust (charge exchange stroke)
The exhaust gas is expelled when the piston moves up.

The correct answer is three. The piston moving downward creates a vacuum, or negative pressure. The pressure of the atmosphere, or positive pressure moves the air into the cylinder filling it for compression.
