I was wondering if anyone knows if taking off the the air silencer and the resonator box yields any horsepower gains. Is it worth it? Are there any negative effects? I've got a 2003 Mach 1

definitley wont hurt anything, and it helps air flow quite a bit.

Thanks a million. I guess I'll try it. Is this something you've tried?

Yeah its like the first thing I did when I got my mustang, Not too hard to do, just gotta tinker with gettin the silencer out of the fenderwell, you'll see why you should do it, its like sucking through one of those little coffee straws so once you take it off it opens it up ALOT more.

He has a Mach 1. How does that airbox setup work?

Well I think Mach's have the Silencer that goes into the fender well like mine did, he also has a resonator box towards the top of the intake tube which is really not necessary but what my friend did was cut it off and put tape around it, but Im sure theres a better way, correct me if Im wrong about the silencer in the fenderwell?

The silencer is indeed in the fender well and the resonator box is half way up the air intake. I guess I'll take them both off hopefully the shaker makes some noise. Do you think that it would help to put some sort of duct work up to the filter< from the bumper> just so it a strait shot and not swirling in the fender or whatever?

Does anyone make a cold air kit for the mach 1s?

I believe so, I like the intake kits that still utilize the shaker so its not "useless" kinda gives you a dual ram air setup in a way. JLT makes a fine setup for the mach's

Jlt Huh? I'll give them a look. By the way do either of you guys know what to do about pulley noise? My Dad and I washed the engine with Black Magic and now the pulleys make a whirring noise. Most specifically the alternator pulley. they haven't seemed to have affected how my car drives but i absolutely detest the noises.

Yeah I had a JLT for a while and loved it, big ol' 4 inch tubing. but it looks cheap because the inside of it looksl ike PVC piping pretty much and with splotches of paint on the inside, but it does the job, plus its not freakin metal like some intakes I see, Metal=gets VERY HOT! JLT stays a lot cooler. Not sure about the pulley thing though, hopefully someone can chime in?

Well if it looks like it's PVC maybe I'll make my own...Get myself some spray paint and voila CAI!

Yeah thats the one I was talking about earlier, the JLT that keeps the shaker useful. If I were you I would go with that intake. looks sharp

So I took off the air silencer. I'm going to see if there is a difference. I want to take off the resonator box but I have nothing to cover the hole where it should be. I don't want to buy one of those fancy plugs because i plan to buy a CAI. Any suggestions?

Well I did something ridiculous I took the resonator box out and plugged it with a cap. More specifically a cap from a drano bottle. The red of the cap looks cool but the "Push and Twist" doesn't. Ha ha oh well...

As for as best bang for the buck mods, I say go with some gears (4.10's or higher) 4v's love to rev and gears really wake them up. Mach's are pretty nasty with some gears in them (as far as N/A 4v's go) but the most common mods I see on Mach's are:
Meziere electirc water pump
PHP Intake Spacer
You may also want to look into exhaust options as well because mach's have pretty restrictive exhausts which isn't good for a free-breathing 4v. That should also wake it up some, I noticed a SOTP difference when I put my exhaust on (bbk o/r x and magnaflow magnapacks) and thats for a otherwise stock 2v GT.
P.S. STAY AWAY FOR UNDERDRIVE PULLIES! I hear that mach's have oil pump problems when they have U/D pullies on.

I'd love to get my exhaust done but I can't decide what to go with. I want to do everything from the headers back. I want my car to sound like this.

ah dude thats like my favorite mustang video of all time! lol funny that you chose that. yeah I looked up the specs on the car and he has a full custom exhaust and custom ground turbo cams, If I had the money I would do that setup in a heart beat. What are you looking for exhaust wise? loud raspy? or deep rumble? for a 4v you cant beat bassani, hell even 2v bassani sounds amazing. I like the setup of the slp o/r x pipe and mac flowpath catback, sounds AMAZING on a mach 1

That is funny. When I heard that car my heart skipped a beat. Absolutely love the sound of it. I want a deep rumble. I want it loud so I was thinking SLP but I don't know if I should go X or H pipe and what kind of cats if any at all. I want to do headers too but I don't know about them either. I was thinking long tube JBA. Any thoughts?
