Really happy with SNL visit today. Things moving forward. The upper cog drive and shaft are fabricated and ready to go. We have the tensioner and need to resolve mounting it. Right now waiting on belt and a couple of spacers. The best news is once everything is lined up we may not need to change the radiator.

How much boost are you running?
Got to 21 when the accessories started melting. Looking for 25+ when the cogs are on. Load will be off the accessories then.

That is a nice reservoir.
That is a nice reservoir. LoL looks familiar eh?
Complete Front End over haul underway as well, including bushings tie rod ends, ball joints. Also will include 90/10s and new front springs.

Getting to be 1/4 mile time soon.
Really soon. Waiting on one more piece for the cogs, then the rollbar
Started on the remote water pump installation today. I am eliminating the tensioner on the passenger side and wonder if anyone might know of an aftermarket tensioner I can replace the fixed tensioner on the driver's side with?

Thanks Lonestar :) Had a pretty good day today. Spent some time mocking up the remote water pump layout and trying to determine how to solve the tensioner issue.
For the layout, the battery goes to the trunk and we will mount the electric water pump on the frame rail where the battery tray was. The remote thermostat and filler neck will mount on a brace on the passenger side head. That lets me run all the hoses to the engine in from the passenger side and clears away any interference from the Power steering pump. The return from the pump goes into the radiator bottom mount while the return from the filler neck will be the longest run from the passenger side head mounted bracket back to the driver's side radiator fitting. All in all it will clean up nicely and keep the heat on the passenger side. Steve is going to mount the Moroso Power steering pump on the driver's side back near the master cylinder. At the end of the day we will have probably moved 50-60 lbs off the nost of the car to the trunk.
For the tensioner, the Whipple had an 8 rib tensioner for the serpentine belt. That tensioner was mounted on the front bracket and was used to achieve better belt wrap. It is already aligned with the accessory drive. We might have to trim the outer ribs off, it was a ten ribbed serpentine tensioner. Final bits coming from Moroso include the rear mount battery kit and cables and some black anodized fittings. We are just waiting for the tensioner spacer for the Cog tensioner now. Pictures is with everything mounted more or less except the cooling hoses.

Here is a view from a different angle. You can see the 10 rib Whipple Serpentine pulley. I am going to use that as a tensioner on the accessory belt. We are waiting on the fabrication of the spacer for the cog tensioner in the mock up it appears to not be stuck out enough..

These are the finished shots of the new ball joints and bushings to include new struts with Lovell's 90/10s.

Here is the final mock up with the mounting bracket for the remote thermostat in place. We may have to shim it all out a little more. Also instead of the NPT to 1.25 hose connection we will probably go with an 1" NPT to -12AN fitting.

Got a little more done today. Began to test fit the -12AN fittings with the remote water pump. Have one issue I will heave to solve with the driver's side lower fitting. Solution may be to reroute the belt, the 90 degree -12AN swivel fittlng hits the belt on the traditional tension pully mount. Still waiting on 4 -12AN Fittings from Jegs. Also got the plugs for the back of the remote thermostat and the temperature sending unit opening.

One of the biggest projects was to weld the heat exchanger coolant reservoir to the XS Power battery tray. I think it looks pretty good and gives me a place to mount the tank flat and secure in the trunk. SNL is working with a new fabricator who does an excellent job.

Nice build, looks like it should be a beast on the track!!!!
We intend to finish the battery wiring tomorrow, mount all the fittings for the water pump, and the coolant reservoior in the trunk. Wednesday we will hook up the hosing and have the final meeting with the machinist who is designing and building the tension pulley bracket. Hope to be tuning in a week or two. Really quality welding getting the PS reservoir bracket set up and notching the valve covers/welding in tabs so they won't slide and welding in the 90 degree fittings for the evac system.

Quite a bit done today. Finalized the electrical system setup with the rear moutned battery. We should have that in in a couple of weeks. The welder finished most of the valve covers and the evac system. Also got the water pump bracket roughed in. Going to mount it along the passenger side frame rail where the battery came out using battery tray holes. Running the outlet down through the frame and bending it 90 degrees into the engine compartment.

Fabulous day today. Got the bulk of the remote water pump fittings mounted. All that is left now is to resolve the heater issue and string the hose. I think the pump mount was pretty cool, drilled a hole in the frame and fed the -12AN swivel fitting through the frame. This way if the wheels somehow get up and we bounce hard, the water pump will have a backup brace to hold it and keep the unit out of the belts and hoses.

Bruce began the remote battery mounting. He has studied it for a while and decided to mount a Ford solenoid in the back instead of using the OEM solenoid with the starter. This will keep the wire to the starter from being hot all the time. It will only be hot when the ignitioin switch is turned on to start the car. He's going with breakers instead of fuses and got the rear grounding hooked up.

Bruce finished wiring the battery, at least on the trunk side, connecting the Ford solenoid, the breaker switch, cutoff switch, grounding, and alternator wire. He ran the cabling to the front of the car through conduit.

I am looking for an electric twin fan with a very low profile, preferrably less than 2.5". Without that we may have to modify the radiator mount and or build a new radiator. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Pretty good day today. Bruce finished the trunk and back side wiring then moved to the forward engine compartment. He completed most of the cable wiring from front to back as well. In the engine compartment he linked everything to the distribution box and fed from there to relays for the accessories, fans, pumps, etc.

Thanks, what really impresses me is that Bruce is moving all the wiring away from the heat. I was amazed at how much of the OEM stuff was near headers etc.
Idle time costs me money. Painted my custom valve covers to match the Whipple. So now I have two different kinds of covers.

Tried the painted GM Performance Valve Covers on today. Agreed the letters need to be touched up, my first reall attempt at stenciling and there is some residual Masking tape painted red still sticking to them but I think the effect goes well with the Whipple.

How long until the first fireup?
I had sincerely hoped tomorrow, still some loose ends though. As long as this has taken I get discouraged sometimes. To be honest firing it up in 115 degree heat in the shop isn't even exciting. I sincerely hope to have it running by the middle of next month though that might be aggressive.
Damned good week this week. Only thing between us and some Dyno time is wiring and installing the fans and radiator, then hooking the cooling system up to it. Here is the plumbing hooked up except for the radiator and the rear mounted heat exchanger. We will probably work on the hoses to clean them, up but I am very pleased with the setup as is.

Just got back from a hell of a good trip to SNL. Steve has really outdone himself. He has designed a top cog pulley that I believe is going to be more resilient and less prone to either breakage or belt walking due to flexing. The solution is high quality machined with very close tolerances. His earlier attempts were pretty good but there was still a little bit of flex in the Cog and the mount which transferred the pressure to the rest of the snout. You guys have topld me breaking snouts is not an uncommon thing. Steve has taken the entire thing to a new level, an artform as far as I am concerned. Some might not like it but I personally believe it will carry me to levels of output I never thought possible and do it reliably. Anyone with a Gilmer drive or contemplating going to one with either a Kenne Belle or a Whipple should contact SNL and talk to Radio. Pics below are of the actual snout shaft for the cog. Radio will release the pictures of the brace when he finishes it.

We got the car on the dyno last night. Good news is she held 21 lbs of boost with no falling off so the cog drive works great. Also the Moroso remote electric water pump kept the ECT at a steady 185-190 through the session, I highly recommend that product. On the down side the injectors maxed out. We are going to have to go to 190 lbs injectors to keep up with the 21 lbs of boost. IATs were through the roof so we have some work to do there yet. We also discovered a breaker box in the rear mount battery install was just not robust enough to survive the vibrations and we will have to work out an alternative to that. Car made 775/850 to the wheels with 12 degrees of timing in a best of two pulls. We get the injectors sorted out and work on the IATs we will hit at it again.

Thanks, I have enjoyed your following this and commenting :):hi:
I've teased you guys for about a week on the new snout for the cog drive. I am sure many were wondering how many seconds the cog would last until it snapped off. This is the solution designed by Steve Addison of SNL Performance. Snout problems and belt slipping are problems of the past.

So I went over to the phone and called GForce1320 and ordered a 9 inch rear end with a Moser pumkin, 3:50 gears, and a 35 spline Wave Trac upgrade. Stand by for pics

Parts have started arriving and the first received was the housing. Thought I'd follow along with it as we install it. First up was strengthening and modifying the stock control arms.

I didn't realize you had IRS in the car with a 9" center. Never seen that before.
Lots of the GTOs are going to 8.8's nowadays. When we topped 965 rwtq we figured the 9 inch was a good direction since all I have to do for the SRA is get the bracing and housing.
Damned injectors were so big we had to take the blower off to get them on. Everything is on and buttoned up, waiting for Matt to tune it. E85 conversion complete except the tuning.

thats one car i wont try to run on the street. that rear end is soooo sexy! this is the only gto i like! curious, whats been don to the motor its self and whats the displacement of the whipple?
It's a 4 liter Whipple. We are pretty much near maxing the motor out. It is a 408 LQ9 and was purpose built by Texas Speed for boost. They told me around 1500 was the limit on the shortblock. Eagle forged innards with Diamond -.28 cc dished pistons. Everything coated. The motor was being built for a pro team that went broke and I got a break on it. The heads are ETP 245 cc and the cam is a custom FI grind from SNL We made 969/1111 today.

Really couldn't answer the question about covering or leaving out in the open until we saw what we had to work with when we got it to close. I will be looking to see what it would take to cover the blower and intake.
Next major hurdle was the intake and Throttlebody. Inexperienced worker was a barrier, a few unnecessary dings and scratches

Picked up a really cool Roll Bar mounting kit from Pegasus Racing. Fits the Firecharger fine. Also figured out this Firecharger System only supports a total of three nozzles with outlets for two lines. That means that I will have two nozzles in the Trunk/Fuel Cell zone and one nozzle in the cabin on me. Based on that I am going to install another pbttle to have two nozzles in the engine compartment with an additional one in the cab on me. I would like to figure out a cable pull system that would allow me to activate both bottles simultaneously. Anyone with ideas let me know.

As I am fixing the split seams on the front seat I also decided to begin the cleanup of the Roll Cage welding in the back. I am using brushed on Rustoleum Enamel this time, used enamel spray paint last time. First order of business was to clean up the welded areas, especially where the heat started rust. Had to wire brush off the old paint which was flaking. Took it down to bare metal as best as I could. I primerred it this afternoon and will paint it glossy black tomorrow.

Finished up the first part of the Fire Suppression. I have three zones; cabin, trunk/fuel cell, and engine compartment. Need to get another bottle to do The engine compartment and to put an extra nozzle in the cabin. Lines are run. At the end of this I will have two nozzles in the engine compartment, two in the cabin, and two in the trunk, Right now I have 2 in the trunk and 1 in the cabin. Finished up neater than I expected though replacing the paneling is going to be a fun time.

Got the headers installed today, Didn't get time to put the steering rack in. Still have that to do. Have a guy going to redo my driver's seat Monday. All we need is some sign of life out of liberty and RPM.
Note the use of blood during the install, seemed to make things slide into place easier.

Just pulled the trigger on an FTI Stage 5 TH400 and all the supporting mods. Should be in next week and hopefully have the car running again within the next two weeks. Knew I should have done this in the first place and feel really good about the decision.
The 6 speed came in today. I am a little sad I won't be using it but I am more and more stoked about the FTI build. Here it is. Greg already has parts en route to Texas.

Took us 19 hours to get the speedometer gear off. Could have probably done it sooner but have never done that so was somewhat of a pussy about it. Finally got it off this afternoon. Has delayed the build a bit.
First thing we had to do was take the old style Speedometer Gear off the Output Shaft

Then we had to heat up the 17 tooth reluctor that enables us to use the Speed Sensor
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Transmission/Transmission-38-640.jpg
Align the Reluctor to the middle of the hole, approximately the same location as the gear we removed.

Bolt in the Speed Sensor and button up the tailshaft
I had really hoped to spend next week finishing the small stuff and dyno tuning it. Then a couple of weeks getting the hood finished. The delay has pretty much put the whole fall drag racing season at risk. While I could run without a hood after all the effort I thought I would just wait until the car was done. I can't put the CBM intake on, can't finish the hood, can tune the car until I get the transmission in. Cannot even really finish putting the interior in.
We have gotten some stuff done. Replaced the rear main seal and bolted the flexplate in, removed the shifter boot and cut the console for the shifter to fit, plus put the hole cover plate in.

We had to change torque convertors so it has delayed us some. Got the new unit in today and I will attack it tomorrow. Also worked on a setup for the Fire Suppression System. The system I bought supports only two zones. I will buy another but was perplexed at how to put suppression in all three zones with a single pull release. Solution will be a roll bar mounted cable mount with both cable pulls side by side. I can rig a pull like an ejection seat or something where one tug pulls both cables. Here is the setup with only one pull mounted. Will probably end up putting that on the top bar.

Working on a central console for the various switches. This is the first stab containing the LC1 calibration button and LED, The Line loc switch and the transbrake button. Will eventually incorporate the Nitrous switches and hope to steal Plumcrazy's idea to use one button on the shifter knob controlling either the transbrake or the line loc depending on how the toggle goes. Was thinking it would be cool to toggle a switch for the fans for cooling power between runs.

Very nice work!
Thanks, its getting very close to being done.
Got much of the interior back in today. Still have to remount the ECM, front kick panels and passenger seat. I think the console panel turned out well. I bought a second Firecharger system so now I service three zones with two nozzles each. To solve the activation challenge I just mounted the handles where I could pull them both easily.

Test fired one of the Firecharger systems today. I have set up two systems to cover three zones. Couple things to take out of this. The charge lasts about 15-20 second. The coverage was skewed here by the outdoors windy condition yet the spray pattern seemed fairly consistent. the globs at the end were due to a misaligned nozzle.

Put in the drivers side harness today, well mostly, still have to work on the mounting on the right side of the car. We also got the fuel pump filters right. Thanks to RUQWIKR on LS1GTO for pointing out the fire suppression bottles need to be horizontal to function properly. That will be my next project.

Got Ethyl out for street tuning yesterday. She decided to show us who was boss and proceeded to kill the entire Alliance Air Show and Goodguys car show. All Matt and I had to do was get her to the right intersection at the right time. On the up side, we heard some cool insults, some of which are anatomically interesting though most likely impossible. Saw several vintage firearms and a couple of nickel plated Saturday night specials. I'd estimate we had 10,000 cars blocked for about 10 minutes. Once her point was made she fired right up and continued on the 60 mile journey home. Enjoy the video, the reason for the grey was I had ducked a 22 caliber pistol shot and dropped the phone on the seat camera side down. A couple of people from the Goodguys show followed us over to the nearest lot to tell us she sounded good. Three bikers came over to whip our ass.

I am looking for a better window switch option than the OEM. I think I have found a couple of rocker switches that will work. I am going to move the fire pulls back to the rollbar then add a on off on switch with two LED's one for transbrake and one for lineloc. Plumcrazy turned me on to the setup. With the switch, the LED will indicate which one is active for the shifter button.

Taken about a week to figure out the throttle stuff. I turned the TB 90 degrees and made a bracket to run it in from the side. Took some monkeying around to get it where it would give me 100% but I think I am there.

After a lot of fun I sold the Whipple. Just finishing up a 62mm twin turbo install
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo Whistle/Turbos/4f038b11-baca-4f9c-8a52-fccbe4f463c6_zps6360b195.jpg
I appreciate you guys and gals following us on the Whipple build. We had a lot of fun with the Whipple and learned a lot of things. In all, over 750,000 views were logged against the Whipple build through several of the top sites. For five years now we have dealt with the Whipple and watched our build go from a one of a kind to seeing the COPO Camaro 4.0 Liter Upgrade using much of the same things we discovered, though to a much better result. I'd have to declare the Whipple a success. We decided to go a different direction after many hours of discussions with Mike@Whipple and Brent@CBM. Both of those guys helped us many ways over the years to overcome problems and come to solutions. The result is if/when I buy a Camaro, the 4.0 liter Whipple, 170mm TB and Crusher intake will be my choice.
For now, we wanted to go a different route. SNL Performance has long been heavily engaged in Turbocharged applications and we really wanted to apply the same level of effort to a Twin Turbo Setup with as much passion as we put the Whipple package together. Steve Addison of SNL had studied the twin turbo applications found in some of the rear mount technology and the APS kits. Over the years we have helped customers with Twin Turbos replace kit designs with larger turbos, we've ported Turbos and accomplished a dozen other tweaks. In many cases constraints in the customer goals limited the outcomes. On this build Steve made a special effort to understand my goals and then set out to have my fabrication done in a manner that is consistently high in quality and easily repeatable.
We chose to fabricate the installation so that it fit the existing 2004 GTO (Ethyl). We did not want to spend a large amount of time moving brake lines and electrical fuze boxes. If you are looking for exotic and innovative ways to tuck the ABS, we were not interested in solving the problem so you won't see it emerge here. My goals are somewhat more modest than with the Whipple. I am looking for a solid performing car in the 800 rwhp range with improved reliability and that we do not have to accomplish custom fabrication for the core system components beyond the initial Turbo build.
Steve chose the Precision units that have really had a positive reliability and quality reputation in the Honda and Supra world. After several communications with Aaron at Precision we settled on two options, twin 6266 or twin 6766. I chose the 6266 giving up potential growth for a better spool. The units have a 0.81 AR with a T4 flange.
Before we could get to the good stuff we had some cleanup to do with Ethyl.
First, the Mosier pumpkin with the Wavetrac 35 spline Diff could not handle the power the Whipple made. On the fourth 60% throttle pass the Wavetrac disintegrated. There were less than 1000 miles on the unit. At our power level, Mosier/Wavetrac agreed to fix the rear end one time but advised my they could not continue the lifetime warranty. After a very amiable conversation with a gracious representative from Mosier we opted to get our money back on the Wavetrac.
Chris Nichols at GForce Engineering recommended we try a Strange S-Trac. I had considered a spool which I had run successfully at this power level on the OEM differential. However, I broke an LCA while running the spool and prefer not to use one with the IRS. If the S-Trac cannot hold I am going to an SRA.
Next, the battery relocate done when the Whipple was on the car was my first and it was not well done. SNL has taken a couple of weeks to sort out the wiring problems we encountered as we began to bolt the Twins up. We stopped the install on the Twins and went through the entire car rerouting, wrapping, and reconnecting the wiring.
We also pulled the Nitrous kit. That may have been a mistake but for now we are just going to see what the Twins can do. I know where Waco is if I need to reinstall it.
In addition to the above, one of the driving factors on the twins was to have a hood back on the car. So I have bought my eighth hood and it is waiting patiently to be installed.
Most of the Fabrication and patch up work is done. We expect to start tuning next week. Here are a few teaser pictures of the car with the mockups and in some cases, the final fabrication, in place.

Damn nice runs.
Ima stoked. With both Turbos, new stall, boost controller, GForce1320 Cradle mod, wires that are not melted, and bead locked tires we hope to do better.
We packed up to leave thinking the stall was the only problem. Got disabused of that when we thought we had popped the motor (did I mention car was driven 30 miles to the track and 2 miles back towards home? Car started smoking so we trailered it. Turned out the driver's side Turbo ate itself at some point during the day. Cannot believe it was an instantaneous failure, even so, looking forward to whatever comes our way. Thanks for being such a graceful host these past few years.
Looking for alternatives to the Precision Turbos, anyone have suggestions? Actually Precision stepped up to the plate. We are pretty happy right now. Turbo is back and ready to go.
After the shakedown, we detected a few things that we needed to improve to realize the full potential of the car. That includes a two step, boost controller, new stall, driver's side turbo, screws on the wheels for the slicks, and new front runners. We are hoping to get a GForce1320 modified cradle and solid bushings installed. Lot's of progress being made and hopefully we can get it together before the tracks shut down for the seasn.

Yes but thus far we are getting better results off the footbrake
I got to say getting the converter right was a tough challenge. We finally found a local guy that was able to nail it on the first try but it took some hard searching. We burst the FAST 102 Manifold now so we are going to have to deal with that.

We burst the FAST 102 Manifold now so we are going to have to deal with that.It took me two tries to get it right when I had the Cobra.
I had two reputable vendors just unable to get it right and insist I didn't know what I was talking about. Cost me getting the car dialed in this fall.
LSx block gets in tomorrow. Going to use the Eagle Crank and Rods I have in the 408 and add 4.125 Pistons bringing her out to 427 Ci. More importantly, the LSx will have the 6 bolt heads vice the 4 bolt heads the current LQ9 has. This will allow us to boost in the 25-30 psi range more consistently without lifting the heads.
So say goodbye 408

We passed 1000 4-5 months ago, were at 1145/1269 when the Torque converter became an issue. We lifted the heads at 27 lbs of boost. My limit now will be the turbos and that will be around 1470 rwhp for the two PTE 6266's. Go big Orange....

Not as obvious here as when you look at it but the reluctor wheel (2 of them) have different gaps around the circumference. The wheel is loose in areas, you can tell the two pieces that had been fitted together have become unattached in areas making the assembly sort of wobbly. we'd sort of been all over the board on what the problem might be. Initially thought perhaps a burned piston. Leakdown was indecisive so we theorized that a head was lifting at higher boost. We knew we would not be sure until we had it down. Good news is that the crank, rods, pistons, and LQ9 block are in good shape. The walls are not scuffed or damaged, pistons look okay and the rods show no sign of contacting anything. Probably good thing we pulled it down when we did.

Nice. Do you own a bank? :Bucktooth:
Nope, catching a lot of heat from critics suggesting my turbos are too small yadda yadda yadda. I am hoping to recoup some money on the LQ9 and pistons. Selling the Supercharger allowed me to do much of the turbo stuff, fact is, financials are governing the build
So we got the motor back and the heads are done. Waiting on the Turbos to return from Reed. Two brand new units were both on the verge of a catastrophic failure so he replaced the entire bearing housings and bearings. Since we have considerably upgraded the engine, we are going to try a 66 mm Borg Warner unit with a true T4 flange that will give us a little more support for the larger cubic inch unit.

What are you shooting for in the 1/4 ?
I start going down that path I get out of reality land quickly :) In the back of my heart there has been a desire to have a sub 9 second timeslip in a nearly full weight car if that makes sense? Certain things I have set out to accomplish include:
Guys like you inviting me to share the build and offering interesting discussions on it.
Exhalting Vendors I work with who go an extra mile to provide a product or service and who do so with a friendly cheerful attitude
Prove to my self that I could achieve something through hard work
Doing this and avoiding a big amount of debt...I do not owe a nickel on the car as it now sets.
When I first bought the car some folks said they were ugly and slow, can't fix ugly but would like to make it fast
Talking shit to other car guys :)
My dad once said it was stupid to waste this much time and money on something. He made the comment as he was climbing into his Bass Boat. That was a number of years ago. Dad is a civil engineer and quite accustomed to challenging technical issues over time he couldn't help but get interested in the car and has got to the point now where he asks questions like how do you use a boost controller to set the power ramp up to keep the tires from being blown away. I was staggered when he asked that. Then I learned his deep dark secret. A mutual friend of ours is a NHRA Hall of Fame member. He drove a Top Fuel Slingshot in the 60's and a funny car in the 70's. I did not know that but Dad did and the guy has been feeding dad things to ask me, Once I discovered the secret, Preston invited us to the NHRA Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green. We sat there for three days listening to former world champs talk about the old days of match racing and various other war stories. Preston showed Dad how they developed direct port injection on their top fuel Hemi's in 1966. Now dad calls and asks me when I am going to Oklahoma to mix it up :) Here is Preston Davis, our friend, telling former world champion Jim Walthers a fishing story about my Dad.

I guess you can say everything else is pretty much gravy.

Here is Preston's current build
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X5r02Fyx0E
So with everything going on trying to get the build done I brought the car home Friday. If any of you saw the fire, the explosion raised the hood a couple of inches and loosened the back bolts. While the hood has primarily been held on by the front latch, for peace of mind I decided to pin it. Understand that I have not pinned a hood in 46 years. Now, at age 17, I have a damaged nerve in my neck and the cold weather today did nothing to help any other essential body part to feel better. So I just said screw it and pinned the damned hoods. You guys that do this stuff all the time will probably laugh your asses off, you would for sure if you had watched me. At the end of the day, the pins are in and I enjoyed doing the work.
The biggest problem on our cars is figuring out where to put the damned pins. The narrow radiator support brace is pretty near the front of the hood, not leaving much real estate to bite on if needed to keep the hood in place at 155-160 mph. On top of that, in that area, the top of the hood has a sharp curve that makes laying the pins in an area that is relatively flat to the top of the pin is difficult.. I am sure there will be several why didn't you do this comments which will make me ill but for those of you following this, will make your experience and installation much better.
Remove the front bumper and the headlights, might as well take off the radiator shroud as well.
The obvious candidate for the pins is the bumper stops or pre existing holes in the brace. After pulling the headlights and front bumper I first took the data plate off and looked at the two large holes located in that place on each side. beautiful holes, fit nicely on the brace, cleared the headlight but was way too close to the front of the hood and did not fit into the indentation in the hood bottom above it.
So, I decided on the radiator support brackets. They are more inboard and further back from the front of the hood. That entailed pulling the shroud, marking, and drilling holes in the brace. For those of you that have not really studied it, our cars are not symmetrical. Every inside measure must be confirmed from the outside by backing off and visually inspecting them to ensure they are in fact spaced correctly.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Hood/HoodPins-9-640_zpsa3397a7b.jpg
Once I decided where the pins should mount and drilled the base holes I installed them and put white grease on the tips, then lowered the hood to mark the underside for the drilling.
The hood underside is double paneled meaning there is a lower panel and an upper panel. I used a 1 1/4" hole saw to drill the bottom half, Then I put more grease on the poles and closed the hood again to mark the top panel. I drilled a pilot hole through from the bottom then lowered the hood and used the hole saw to drill a 1 and 1/4 inch hole in from the top too. This gives the pin room when you close the hood so it doesn't get snagged on the side of the newly drilled holes.

Once the holes are drilled close the hood and position the striker plates. I chose a cheap traditional hood pin set from JEGS but will probably go back and get one of those kits that has neoprene striker plates. These seem to be less stressful to the Fiberglass.

Damn that thing hauls ass. 8's are coming.I think we will be deep in the 8s when we straighten out the suspension. We are running stiff bushings. We are going to replace them with aluminum solids. Means my street days are over probably but on the launch, the rear wheels are pinching forward and inward. Check this out. This was the 9.2 @ 154 run. As the car passes the camera which was at the 330 foot mark you can see the front tires are close to off the ground and still lifting/weight transferring. The slicks are pushed forward in the wheel well and you cannot tell it but they are pinched inward. Standing on the line, you can see the left front wheel for the whole 1/4 mile. The 9.2 pass was literally sideways from start to finish. You can see the wheels are trying to lift off all the way out to the 1/8 mile mark

What setup are you running on the front suspension?
Still have the OEM brakes and rotors. Running Lovell's struts with 90/10's, strut bearings, and supporting bushings/hardware.

Some adjustable stunts would help a bunch. It is obviously too loose.
Agree, however, for most of the run the front tires were barely contacting the track, contributing.

What kind of Times are you posting?Keep in mind we've only had 8 shakedown passes. Best of 9.2 @ 154 (see post 208). On the gate we are running 10.40's at 145. The 9.2 pass was on 14 PSI, the car will make 23 PSI, we are just trying to figure out how to make it hook.
Lots of suspension work needed yet.

Stiff wall slicks?
So there have been times in the last 10 years I actually thought we would get Ethyl together and start driving the piss out of her. During those times I entertain myself with ideas of things I would like to do. One thing I have been working on for a couple of years is a more business like and functional console that accommodates the reverse manual shift pattern of the TH400. I do not or am not able to drink anything in the car, mostly because of the 250 lbs springs on the coil overs which require a mouthpiece when driving on Texas concrete roads. So right off the bat the cup holders had to go. Got rid of them a few years ago but the console lacked the functionality I wanted. Even the nice looking M6 shift boots really bug me since you cannot tell what the transmission is doing in a glance. So I got hold of Brian Kilduff and picked up once of his fantastic Lighting Rod shifters. I thought the multi-lever shifter was cool, because "race car."
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Shifter-5-640_zpsgk5geuvu.jpg
The unit is as solid as a piece of construction gear. I swear you would expect a D8 Caterpillar shifter to be this strong. The unit was mainly made to stand alone though Brian does sell consoles. He doesn't provide anything that can be sculpted into the existing console lines, his consoles are just folded aluminum tunnels. I like the unpolished aluminum look but after fires and all the horseshit we've come through I didn't have the heart or coin to ask Steve to make it work. So I just started the project myself. I had already been working on the console looking for ideas on electronics, switches, and so forth. In early versions I tried to use ABS Plastic to form a replacement for the shift boot.
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-48-640_zps33d21d75.jpg
Right away the window switches were a problem. The switch box is huge under the console. I would have loved to have scrapped the OEM Switches and put my own in..
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/58b616a9-238f-464c-8514-dbacd07ea634_zpsamafb8gp.jpg
At one point the panel hosted the fire suppression handles as well as the electronics.
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-32-640.jpg
Unable to overcome the switches, the earlier versions envisioned a quick release panel that the new switches would be put in (Transbrake and Lineloc). This way they would be accessible with the 1/4 turn fastener. That was used early on and eventually the carbon fiber replacement for the cup holders came to host the Leash Boost Control Display.
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/BnMShifterInstallJPG-14-640_zpsf2cd893d.jpg
So I picked up the Kilduff and started trying to figure how to integrate it since it wasn't an easy swap. In one version I built my own sheetmetal console,
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-90-640_zpsb9aomgxl.jpg
Wrestling with the Kilduff and fabricating the necessary components was sort of fun. I sure wish I could lay fiberglass or carbon fiber.
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-92-640_zps9d2ykhtu.jpg
Eventually I have decided I have to cut the OEM Console. Didn't want to do it but didn't cut enough to hurt the structural integrity of it. First I mocked up the base cover with cardboard and fitted it so the console trim piece would still snap in. One of th3e difficult things about that trim piece is that they seem to have designed it so nothing else would work with it, lots of curves. I just straightened them out some.
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-104-640_zpsfbqudcaa.jpg
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-105-640_zpsgn0onj8h.jpg
Eventually I even cut the centr trim brace on the trim piece.
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-107-640_zpsmaqps2yx.jpg
http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-108-640_zpsoid8hi6l.jpg
Fitment seems pretty good and gear shifter travel seems to be okay. Ther is adequate room to mount the electronics behind the shifter, including the Leash boost control window which I am really considering moving above the Radio or in the hole the radio will leave. I am using aluminum as the base. Haven't decided on the thickness but will probably have it as thick as I can and still snap the consoie trim back in place.

Thanks John, I certainly enjoyed meeting you and talking with you. I am very sorry we did not have the time to get in the shop and maybe to the track. On the other hand perhaps we can at some point in the future. I am wrestling with two options on the shifter. One is the exposed plate as I have shown and ther would be a modified variant. The good news is I can put anything I want on it as long as I can get it drawn. This is the direction I am going but I have a variant with a smooth polished plate covering the entire surface.
