I will soon need to be getting new street tires for my car. I currently have the Nitto 555 drag radial. They are a good tire, but traction is a little iffy. What is everyone opinion on tires for an 18in rim that have good traction but a decent wear life?

i ran mickey thompson's, but the wear life sucked! i now have a set of nitto dr's in the new compound and i must tell ya, they are way better than the last set of nitto dr's i had. and this is all in an 18.

After I got out of my stock tires with Nitto drag radials in the rear I changed over to Toyo Proxes T1R all around. I could not be happier.
They LOVE the twisties
See link below for product info:

Nitto came out with a NT-05 i think it has a 200 tread wear ....try thos out me my self run the 305-35-18 Nitto DR
I used to run the 555r's,just switched to the toyo proxes tq drag radial, only had them for 2 months so don't know how long they are going to last. But traction is better.I like em:biglaugh:I'm running 17's but I know they do have them in 18's 315/35/18

I had the Nitto 555 DR's and got about 5k miles out of them with a few passes down the track. I also ran some BFG DR's with 1 pass at the track and got less that 1k out of them so I wouldn't those. Alot of guys have been happy with the MT DR's.

I have been running the Mickey DRs from my house to the track and back only and man do they pick up a lot of crap. They look like I drove them through a gravel pit. I will probably start mounting them at the track after I dig the 85,000 pebbles out of them.
The BFG DRs weren't that bad for this but they also weren't as good of a track tire for me.

It really depends on what kind of mileage you want out of them. If you are looking for something that's going to be used on the street, I'd just pick up another set of Nitto's. The new compound is softer and stickier so you won't get quite as much life out of them, but they still are the best DR if you don't want to be replacing them constantly. Other things like the Toyo Proxes and the M/Ts are nice and sticky, but they don't have the wear life the Nitto's do. No matter what tire you go with, they'll be worlds better than a street tire.

I have the new NT05's, very sticky tire, very quiet, very easy on wet roads and I currently have almost 7k miles on them. I bet ill see at least 5k more from them. Nitto is coming out with a new drag radial, the NT05R, might check that out if you want a true drag radial otherwise the NT05 is an awesome street tire that hooks. I can spin in 1st now but it was almost impossible for the first 5k miles in 1st gear

Great, Thank guys you have given me some good info :biglaugh:
I don't think any of the dr will last as long as the Nittos... nittos need track prep to work at the track... this new compound.. how do you know your buying the new compund? new tread design? are they still called 555R?

Same tread design and same markings on them. Easiest way to tell is to simply feel the tire, but this requires you to know what the old vs. new compound feels like. They feel very different to the touch as you can feel how much softer the new compound is.
Good track prep and a REALLY long burnout before a run will get them to do pretty well if you run them at about 15-16 psi.

Might as well run the Nittos on the street and pick up a cheap set of rims to throw some ET streets on. It will be cheaper in the long run.

I have had both Nittos (with the new compound) and Toyo Proxes. As far as traction goes the Toyos are by far better than the Nittos. Im seeing pretty much the same wear, each have only lasted me about 6 months. Im going to go with the Toyos again for my next set.
